THE CYCLO RIDER | AGAINST THE ODDS
Since its introduction in the early years of the twentieth century, Cyclo has become a symbol of Vietnamese culture and history. But facing the rapid change of society and the modern taste, with a pandemic that never seems to end, long-time cyclo drivers such as Mr. Nam are gradually being left behind. It has been almost 30 years since becoming a Cyclo rider, but the old soldier, who once devoted himself to the common cause of the country, is still sitting there on Hồ Gươm Street, holding a tobacco pipe while waiting for guests to arrive. When asked why he still chooses to work as a Cyclo rider, Mr. Nam only smiled and said: “Once you become a Cyclo rider, you will love it to death. Even when life is down, staying happy and cheerful will keep your body feeling younger. There is no reason to keep a sad face in life”. Let’s learn more about the story of Mr. Nam and the senior Cyclo riders, in the second episode of the series “Against the Odds”.
