Every year at the beginning of the 5th lunar month, the family of Ms. Lâm Tuyết Phương (living in District 11, Ho Chi Minh City) becomes bustling as they prepare to make bánh ú bá trạng for the Mid-year Festival. Offering bánh bá trạng during this time is a traditional cultural practice of the Chinese-Vietnamese community. Since it only happens once a year, every step, from preparation to wrapping and the final product, is carried out meticulously by the whole family. Each season, Ms. Phương’s family sells over 1,000 cakes, yet they still receive eager requests from customers wanting to place more orders.
